Freakonomics dethroned
Having held the #1 spot in my econ blogs ranking continuously for the past few months, Freakonomics has finally slipped to #2, with Marginal Revolution taking the top spot and Greg Mankiw holding on to #3. I actually prefer the less frequent but more in-depth style of Freakonomics over the very rapid but brief posts that appear on Marginal Revolution. However, some of the posts on Freakonomics lately have seemed to me to be a little off topic. For example, this post by Dubner about the morals (or lack of) in Family Guy. I’m kinda annoyed after reading that post actually, because I’ll never be able to watch Family Guy again without thinking about testicles. Thanks.
The other big mover in the blog rankings has been Paul Krugman — he’s shot up to #5 very rapidly. However, these rankings are based on links between blogs in the past six months. I suspect that many of the links to Krugman’s blog are in the nature of “OMG! Krugman’s started a blog!!!1!”. It’ll be interesting to see if he can hold on to that ranking over time.
Update: Freakonomics has regained its crown after only two days.

It might be more helpful and more intuitive if you ranked the blogs directly by Technorati Authority, rather than indirectly by rank. That would make it much easier to make like-for-like comparisons between blogs, and it would also mean that higher was better.
Felix: Good idea. I think the ranking will come out the same, because Technorati’s ranking is just the ranking of authority. But as you said it’s easier to compare authority across blogs and across time. On the other hand, the Technorati ranking also tells us something about how econ blogs compare to non-econ blogs. I think the best thing is to report both the authority and Technorati ranking. Sounds like a project for the weekend :)
I find Cafe Hayek, Marginal Revolution, and Newmark’s Door to be my favs.
Why a site that doesn’t even allow comments is #3 is the mystery. Must have a lot of students.
