New econ blogs

Technorati rankings are back in business and I’ve recently added these blogs to my directory:

Geary Behaviour Centre: the blog of the Centre for Behaviour and Health at the UCD Geary Institute.

Rigotnomics: a blog by ‘wannabe economists’ (their words, not mine) of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.

Game Theorist: musings on economics and child rearing by Josh Gans (an old blog that I’d somehow overlooked till recently).

Also not currently listed on Technorati are two other econ blogs I was alerted to by faithful reader Steve Balassi:

SBVOR: An anonymous macroeconomics blogger, with lots of charts.

Hawkonomics: Another anonymous blogger, from the University of Iowa.

Technorati troubles

Technorati is down (again) which is preventing me from updating econ blog rankings or adding new blogs.

I’ve heard rumours that Technorati are abandoning their blog rankings and this may be an early indication of that. They do not publish rankings on their own website at the moment, but (until now) they’ve still been available to web developers. Also ominously, Technorati’s information for developers has not been updated in a very long time.

So it looks like I may no longer be able to use Technorati to rank blogs. Any other suggestions?

Blog ranking updates

Technorati is currently experiencing technical difficulties which is preventing me from updating the ranking of econ blogs in my directory. The rankings are currently frozen, but I’ll start updating them as soon as Technorati fixes whatever problems it’s having.

Freakonomics dethroned

Having held the #1 spot in my econ blogs ranking continuously for the past few months, Freakonomics has finally slipped to #2, with Marginal Revolution taking the top spot and Greg Mankiw holding on to #3. I actually prefer the less frequent but more in-depth style of Freakonomics over the very rapid but brief posts that appear on Marginal Revolution. However, some of the posts on Freakonomics lately have seemed to me to be a little off topic. For example, this post by Dubner about the morals (or lack of) in Family Guy. I’m kinda annoyed after reading that post actually, because I’ll never be able to watch Family Guy again without thinking about testicles. Thanks.

The other big mover in the blog rankings has been Paul Krugman — he’s shot up to #5 very rapidly. However, these rankings are based on links between blogs in the past six months. I suspect that many of the links to Krugman’s blog are in the nature of “OMG! Krugman’s started a blog!!!1!”. It’ll be interesting to see if he can hold on to that ranking over time.

Update: Freakonomics has regained its crown after only two days.
